Finding the right information is easier when you know where to look!

DATABASES:
A database is a resource of materials that require your library  card number and your 4 digit pin.  If you don’t have a PIN, you can create one. If you forgot your PIN, you can reset it. If all else fails, call the library at 855 – 3444, or email Brian at Director@PawlingLibrary.org for help.

BIOGRAPHIES


A biography is a history of a person’s life.

In our databases you can find articles describing the lives of tons of important people from ancient history to today. These databases also include articles from newspapers, magazines, and books.

NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

A newspaper article can be used to prove how and when something happened, as background information on a topic, or to demonstrate an author’s opinion on a topic.  If you need a newspaper article for a research assignment, you can search our newspaper databases.  In our newspaper databases, you can find the latest articles from newspapers all over the world.

CURRENT EVENTS

Our Current Topics databases provide the latest info on hot topics and issues. You can use these to find opinions and facts and pros and cons views about hot-button issues.

The content on WebMD content isn’t necessarily harmful, but there are more options out there, and you should consider these resources as more sound when doing your research and completing your assignments.

CITATION:

EasyBib automatically cites your sources for you (middle school- college).

OWL gives you information on how to properly cite sources (APA, MLA, Chicago), use grammatically correct sentences, etc. (high school – college).

ZOTERO : A downloadable program that will store articles and files, inserts quotes and citations for you and so much more.  Take this program with you from High School to College!

DICTIONARIES:

Merriam-Webster allows you to look up the definition and sometimes the pronunciation of a word (middle school +).

OneLook: A dictionary search engine, this site searches all the different dictionaries on the web and returns all the websites that define your word.

CLASSROOM HELP

Worldatlas allows you to interact with maps (middle school +).

Regentsprep.org gives you access to interactive tests, lessons, and Regents Exams             (high school).

Math is fun gives middle school and high school students access to homework help/review (middle school + ).

Dr. Lemon gives you access to great review sources for Spanish class on this website           (high school).

Google Scholar allows you to access some online research articles for school (high school +).

Bartleby gives you access to online texts and sources (high school +). Great for English.

CNN this website is a good way to keep up with current news just in case you have a project on current events in your classes (middle school +).

Ask a Scientist  – Science of all kinds.  Start your science inquiry here. It could be for your science project or for your own curiosity. m Search all the past questions and then ask one of your own.  Real scientists answers your questions!

Google Cultural Institute:
There are three sections of the institute.

The Art Project is a collection of artwork and exhibits that can be viewed in great detail by a multitude of artists.  It also includes some virtual tours of different galleries. You can search by museum, artist, and artworks.  Explore the world of art from your computer.

Historical Moments: This section explores significant moments in history with items, documents and pictures.  There are only specific moments that are in this collection, so it would be a great start to a project topic or to just explore events you don’t know much about.

World Wonders: This incredible resource allows you to explore lands far away.  With pictures and resources for the different locations you can explore or even walk around these sites.  With the option to search for a location it is quick to find out if what you’re looking for is there.

LEARN A LANGUAGE

Mango Language Learning Software
This software is completely free to use with your library card.  It will help you learn, keep track of your progress and get you speaking a new language in no time!

PRESENTATION HELP:

InstaGrok allows you to make interactive presentations. For each presentation you can add links and information to each section/branch of your presentation (middle school + ).

Prezi allows you to make presentations online (middle school +).

Fakebook is an online source that allows you to post status updates (like Facebook) for the topic that you are interested in (middle school +).

WordClouds allows you to make a word cloud. For example, if you are talking about English class, you can have different words associated with English around the word “English”                   (middle school + ).

Pinterest allows you to pin ideas. For example, you can pin educational resources               (middle school +).

CARS:

DMV Written Tests: practice tests for the New York Driver’s Examination to help you prepare for your written exam

Defensive Driving: courses for defensive driving are available online or by dvd from several different companies in NY.  Take the 6 hour online course to lower your car insurance or reduce points on your license.  The link takes you to a list of companies so you can shop through them and pick the best one for you!

Kelley Blue Book:  This website will allow you to look up the values of cars, if you are looking to buy, sell, or shop around.

Teen Ink:  A magazine that is written BY teens for teens!  Don’t miss out on this!

Dokkio allows you to bookmark resources and websites that you find helpful (high school +).
