Free Breast and Prostate Cancer Education

Tuesday, October 29 7:00-8:00 pm Are YOU unsure of when to be screened for BREAST CANCER? Do YOU know the risk factors for PROSTATE CANCER? The Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program provides education to men and woman ages 50-74 about breast and prostate cancer. Learn more about: • The risks for breast and prostate cancer • When and where to be screened for breast cancer • How to obtain free breast cancer screening if uninsured • Why older men should talk with their doctor about prostate cancer The Breast and Prostate Cancer Peer Education Program is part of a state-wide effort using local, peer educators to speak with men and women in their communities about breast and prostate cancer. Supported with funds the New York State Department of Health, this education initiative aims to help women better understand the need for regular breast cancer screening, and access screening if appropriate, and educate men about prostate cancer and encourage them to speak to their health care provider. The Blue Olive: Autumn Recipes

Wednesday, October 23 7:00-8:30 pm The Pawling Library will host The Blue Olive for another special event exploring the many ways to use extra virgin olive oil and aged vinegar. Co-founder John Canevari will lead an interactive tasting seminar to guide the class through several unique palette-pleasing recipes. Guests will have the opportunity to taste each recipe and take notes on the preparation and cooking process used to create each dish. The Blue Olive is excited to share brand new products and fantastic recipes from their test kitchen with new cooks and experienced chefs alike. Program fee: $10.00 Registration is required. Advanced Care Planning

What is the difference between a Living Will and a MOLST form? Do I need a DNR and a Health Care Proxy? Laura Palermo from Hudson Valley Hospice will review and explain these forms and answer any questions you may have about them. The Arab Awakening is crushed by Arab autocrats. Consider Saudi Arabia! Sunni and Shia tensions continue. No settlement is on the radar screen for Israel and Palestine. Millions are displaced from a devastated Syria. Persian Iran is ambitious, Turkey in upheaval. The Gulf States are accused of human rights abuses. In this patchwork perilous puzzle, what may be signs of hope, promise? Returning from visits to the Arab Gulf States and drawing on previous visits to Iran, Syria, Turkey, Egypt and Israel, Dr. Baxer will reflect on this complex situation and invite a dialogue. An Afternoon with Actor / Director Roger Hendricks Simon at the Akin Free Library

Saturday, October 12 2:00-3:00 pm Roger Hendricks Simon, who most recently appeared in the film Love in Kilnerry, will discuss and read Sarah Levine Simon’s second novel, the murder mystery, Locked Out. We’ll also be viewing Roger Hendricks Simon’s award-winning documentary film The Boys of Late Summer. Following the presentation, copies of Locked Out will be available for sale.
