The Blue Olive

Last June, John Canevari, co-founder of The Blue Olive, located in the village of Pawling, was our host for a cooking seminar. One year later, on June 28th, John returned for another presentation and was assisted once again by his fellow Blue Olive partners Laura and John Leahy. An all new selection of dishes was prepared during the program and served to the audience. Every plate was delicious and beautiful, and Mr. Canevari is as much a superb speaker as he is a chef. A great amount of time was taken to make this program possible and we so appreciate this. It was an outstanding presentation just like their previous, with the quality and professionalism you’d expect to see on the Food Network. We thank our thoughtful and talented good neighbors from around the corner. How fortunate we are that they are there.

The Pledge of Allegiance

The morning after Paul Upham’s presentation The Pledge of Allegiance, I awoke with a John Denver song playing in my mind: Country roads take me home, to the place I belong. Paul, an engaging speaker, shared with us his family’s involvement with the creation of our country’s pledge of allegiance, interesting historical information seldom heard in history classes. The audience interacted throughout the lecture. When his talk of our nation concluded, audience participation grew. Easygoing, Paul was happy to answer all questions. Paul Upham is a professor at Marist College and all of his students are quite fortunate to hear him speak, as were we. He has lived in this community for 45 years and spoke fondly of Pawling and how it has changed over time. I think that is why the song found its way to me: filled with patriotism, connected to the people in this town, all these feelings surfaced and I felt very good. Pawling is home. A good place to be.

Computer Basics

In late March, Jennifer Driscoll donated her time and expertise to conduct a beginners computer workshop for our library. Those who missed this program have the opportunity to register for another class that is scheduled from 7:00-8:00 pm on Wednesday, April 27th. We thank Jennifer for assisting our patrons by providing them with a clear understanding of the computer, and we look forward to her return.

Memories to Cherish

On the 1st Wednesday evening of the month chairs line the community room of the annex. The people who fill the seats are gathered for a program called From Memory to Family Memoir. Our presenter is the former head of Trinity School, historian and author, Robin Lester; a man as brilliant as he is kind. For those in attendance it is always a very moving experience. Sometimes courage is required to read the words from the paper that they hold. Tears are shed and laughter is heard. There is great support among the participants and the deepest respect for one another. This is not a traditional writing workshop. No one is critiqued for their writing skills. What is of importance is to simply record your memories. These are priceless gifts that are presented and will one day be given to loved ones to cherish for years to come. Remember Your Life. Every life is a story. Don’t let yours be forgotten. Share your life with us. The next From Memory to Family Memoir with Robin...

Creating a Better Life

On the 1st day of March a special person with a special gift of helping others was our presenter for an evening program. Her workshop, Create your Pathway to Wellness, gave us solutions to problems, such as stress and depression, that deprive us of happiness and of living the lives that we desire. I thank Jackie Muller for showing a way, a path to follow that leads to a better life, a fulfilling life. One that we deserve to experience. Jackie Muller is a licensed clinical social worker and therapist whose practice we are fortunate is located here in Pawling. She is also a patron of our library. We are always most happy to see her.
