Listen Sundays at 3:00 pm and Mondays at 12:30 pm for Pawling’s premiere literature review and discussion radio program

Susan Schwartzman is passionate about books. When she isn’t busy promoting books as an independent book publicist, she spends most of her free time reading. On her show, Susan’s Book Corner, Susan discusses books she is reading for personal pleasure as well as books by authors she is promoting. Her show is a mix of book reviews, book chats, author interviews, and highlights of what reviewers and the media are saying about the books she discusses. Most of the books she talks about are current titles, but there will be some surprises too. So stay tuned to Susan’s Book Corner to hear all the latest news about what she is reading and what the critics are saying about the latest books. Keep your ears peeled for Susan’s upcoming shows, which include an interview with James Anderson, author of The Never-Open Desert Diner, and reviews of The Door by Magda Szabo, Outline by Rachel Cusk, and A Manual For Cleaning Women: Selected Stories by Lucia Berlin. PES and the Pawling Library Team up to Teach the Code

PES and the Pawling Library Team up to Teach the Code

This winter, the Pawling Elementary School and the Pawling Library teamed up to offer kids in kindergarten through fourth grade an opportunity to learn how to program computers and begin to create their own computer games. The classes, “Learn the Code” and “Cool Creative Coding,” are taught by the library’s children’s program director, Karen DeGennaro, and take place on Tuesdays in the Pawling Elementary School’s library. In these computer-coding classes, students use both plugged and unplugged activities to begin to learn how to create their own games and stories. In the K-2 class, they work in pairs and learn how to drag & drop, program a character to move, create a logical sequence to reach a goal and more. The older students learn how to program characters to move through mazes, move an “artist” to draw pictures, and repeat commands to write efficient directions for their computers. Both groups are learning to use Blockly, a visual editor that lets them write programs by snapping blocks together. In these classes, children develop both computational and critical...

Sign up for the Library’s New Monthly Newsletter

The Pawling Library is continuing to grow, and we’re inviting you to follow along. Starting February 1, 2016, the library will begin sending an email newsletter out to the community that will keep you informed about all the exciting opportunities available at our library in the next month. Articles of interest will be included, as well as important information that you need to know. Without a community newspaper, we thought this would be a wonderful way to share important news about library services, library news, and library programs. Click here to sign up.

3d Printed Lobster for Science Fair

3d Printed Lobster for Science Fair

We’ve had a lot of questions about our new 3D Printer. The printer is an Ultimaker 2, and it’s available for anyone to use. The cost for printing is $0.20 per gram. The printer requires .stl files to print. You can make .stl objects at sites like Tinkercad or find files other people made at Thingiverese. If you have any more questions about printing, you can contact Library Director Casey Conlin at director@pawlinglibrary.org. Our latest print in the time lapse video below is a lobster for the upcoming science fair.
