Our raffle prize this week is a gift certificate to Vinny’s Deli, where you’ll find the best fresh handmade mozzarella, fresh pasta, and gourmet cheeses! Books for Hikers

The Towns of Pawling and Dover were declared an Appalachian Trail Community in recognition of our support and preservation of the AT as a local and national asset. To support the trail, its through hikers, and day hikers, the Dover Plains Library and the Pawling Library teamed up to educate people about the trail, install  Little Free Libraries at the Wiley and Telephone Pioneers Shelters, and to make backpacks with binoculars, guides, and maps available for circulation to promote local use of the trail. Little Free Libraries are the “take a book, leave a book” gathering place where people  share their favorite literature and stories. The Pawling Library put up a LFL at the Telephone Pioneers Shelter, and the Dover Plains Library put one up near the Wiley Shelter. The LFL’s provide reading material for through and day hikers who pass through the shelter and want a book (remember, there’s no need to return the book). OverDrive Big Library Read eBook!

MHLS libraries will all be participating in the next OverDrive Big Library Read—the cozy mystery for readers to kick off the summer just right: A Pedigree to Die For, Melanie Travis Mystery Series, Book 1 by Laurien Berenson. The eBook will be available for simultaneous use, meaning no holds or waitlists for users from June 3-18, 2014. What is Big Library Read? Big Library Read is the worldwide digital version of a local book club, and an opportunity for your library to generate more interest in the digital collection beyond the bestsellers. The next Big Library Read title is being hailed as “fascinating,” “a sleek and unusual book,” and a “special treat.”

John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars is a very popular book these days, and it seems like you can’t get your hands on it. Well we have exciting news! The book is now on our very own Kindles! We have two Kindles here at the library, ready for you to take them out! Just like a book, you take the Kindle out with your library card. With massive hold lists all over the Hudson Valley it may seem like you have to buy this book to read it, but not here at Pawling. The Kindles are here waiting for our Pawling patrons.
