Toilet Paper Olympics Are Filled with Math

Toilet Paper Olympics Are Filled with Math

The Pawling Library’s Crazy 8’s Math Club battled for the gold this week in our Toilet Paper Olympics!  We measured, counted, added, multiplied and estimated our way to feats of major proportion! Who knew there was so much math in a roll of toilet paper!

It’s TIME for Math!

It’s TIME for Math!

This week we thought about time…large chunks of time like centuries, decades and years, small chunks of time like minutes and seconds, and everything in-between. Being able to use calendar dates and clock time not only uses numbers, but shows we understand the concept of time! We even got a chance to estimate when 20 seconds had passed.  Could you do that?

Let’s Hear it for Math!

Let’s Hear it for Math!

Our Crazy 8’s Math Club was at it again, this time exploring sound! We compared lengths and made sound with straws of different lengths.  We noticed the relationship between the length of the straw and the pitch of the sound made with it.  The longer the straw, the lower the sound! We ordered the straws by length and assembled them into pan pipes.  We even used a giant sound meter to see how loud we could get and used subtraction to compare the decibels! Whoa…that’s a lot of math!

Who Says Math Can’t be Fun!

Who Says Math Can’t be Fun!

Students in kindergarten, first & second grade enjoyed an hour of the craziest math ever…glow-in-the-dark geometry! From simple shapes to repeating patterns, we created, counted and collaborated to discover how awesome math really is!

Winter Programs Offer Children Exciting New Opportunities @ the Pawling Library!

Children’s programs are undergoing some exciting changes! While we have always tried to engage students with programs that appeal to a wide range of interests and skills, we also want to keep growing.  Our upcoming Winter Children’s Session will include many programs that will include science, technology, engineering and math in addition to our strong literacy line up.  We’ve also rescheduled some popular programs to give working families an opportunity to have their children participate in library programs. Come join us for an hour of code, where we’ll show you a new computer learning tool called Blockly and inspire you to think, plan and execute programs just like a real computer programmer. Programming helps nurture problem solving skills, logic and creativity.  It’s fun and easy to learn thanks to Code.org! During our children’s winter season we’ll be offering regular sessions to introduce children to the world of computer programming. Think you might be interested…come try it out.
