Thank you Summer Readers!

WOW! Thank you to our Tails and Tales Summer Readers who read over 33,000 minutes (550 hours) this summer to earn our library a new marketplace learning center!   Plus, the Kid’s Team Won the Reading Challenge! The marketplace is now available for families to use in our children’s area. It is designed to help our preschool and toddler patrons learn through play and will feature rotating themes of play such as grocery store, tools and repair, and a flower shop. The repair shop is open now, with alphabet locks, gears, and a pint-sized tool box. Stop by and check it out! To wrap up the program: At the close of our six week Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge, the kid’s team won the Summer Reading Crown for the second summer in a row! Congrats to everyone on the kid’s team who each earned an extra raffle ticket for our big prize raffle and bragging rights as the reading champions!

Summer Reading Update: Almost at Community Goal!

The Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge is well underway. In fact, we have almost met our community goal!  With a group total of 19,708 minutes, we need just a little more help to earn our new kid’s area play set. First Place: Kids (12, 214 minutes) Second Place: Adults (6,975 minutes) Third Place: Teens (519 minutes) Great things happen when we work together! When we hit 20,000, we will earn our community prize, plus new raffle prizes will be added to the pot for you to win, like gift cards to McKinney and Doyle. Kids Take the Lead in Summer Reading Challenge

BIG NEWS! The Kids (ages 0-10) now lead in our Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge!  What age group can read the most this summer? Here are the standings: First Place: Kids (6,205 minutes) Second Place: Adults (2,960 minutes) Third Place: Teens (300 minutes) Together, our community has read 9,465 minutes this summer! We’re almost halfway to our goal of 20,000 minutes! Keep up the great work! Want to get involved and help your team? Want to win free books and other prizes? Join the contest by logging the time you spend reading and learning this summer. You can log online here, print a paper reading log, or pick one up from the library front desk.

Registration Open: Children’s Summer Programs

Registration is now open for all of our children’s summer programming. Our Children’s department hosts programming for children and families from birth through elementary school, all free, educationally focused, and fun! This summer, our programming slate includes in-person programming, take home activity kits, and digital events. Ms. Neena and Ms. Carla are especially excited about the return of Pre-K Science Club and our new Dog Tales reading program with therapy dog, Harper. Tails and Tales Summer Learning Challenge Are you looking for a way to keep yourself or your family engaged in reading over the summer break? Curious about how you can make a difference in our community without leaving home? Maybe you’re competitive and really want to win prizes or earn brag tags to show off your reading progress. Whatever your motivation, our summer reading program can meet your needs! Want competition? Minutes read between June 21 and August 21 will be logged for three teams, the kids, teens, and adults! The team that reads the most minutes will be crowned Summer Reading Champions, and earn extra raffle tickets for the awesome prizes we’re giving away, like a Kindle Fire and local gift cards. Youth readers will also earn brag tags and prizes like tickets to Danbury Westerners games and books. Want to help the community? Upcoming Youth Volunteer Opportunities

This summer, get involved in our community! Below are library volunteering opportunities for kids and teens. Included: Book Buddy Volunteers needed, Reading as service!, Garden Volunteering, and Project Do Something   Become a Book Buddy! For ages 11- 20 We are currently accepting volunteer applications for our Book Buddy program. Teens and tweens ages 11-18 can apply to become reading buddies to our community’s younger, developing readers. Volunteers will be paired with an elementary aged student, whom they will assist in practicing their reading skills, as well as read aloud to. Schedule: Virtually over Zoom, Mondays, 7/12-8/21, 2:20 – 3:00 PM Applicants need strong reading skills and to be available for at least three of the six dates of the program. A parent or guardian’s permission is needed to complete the application. The application is open now. Meet Princess Leia

Calling all Star Wars fans! The force has guided Princess Leia to our library for a special digital program. Join us on Facebook Live on May 13, 4:30 PM as Princess Leia answers questions, shares tales from her adventures in space, and more. Plus, one lucky attendee will win a free one-on-one video call with Princess Leia herself!  To attend, just join our Mid-Hudson Storytime Group in advance of the program and follow the instructions on the homepage after being added to the group. Spring Children’s Programs Registration Open

No more April-fooling around! The full schedule of Spring Children’s programs for children ten and under is now available! We’re continuing to offer our popular activity kit programs, as well as digital events on Zoom and Facebook Live. Starting in May, we’re also introducing our first outdoor, socially distanced programs for children under five and their caregivers!
