Community Book Read: A Passage to India with Stephanie Rogers / Online Program

For this program we are not only commemorating our library’s anniversary but bringing people together through their passion for great literary works. We have selected four classic novels, one for each season, that were popular in the 1920s when our library first came into being. Our presenter, Stephanie Rogers, will be reading an excerpt from each novel and then lead a Q & A for our audience. Stephanie Rogers is the author of The Horse I Belong To: How a Misused and Almost Forgotten Grade Mare Showed Me the Way. Thank you Summer Readers!

WOW! Thank you to our Tails and Tales Summer Readers who read over 33,000 minutes (550 hours) this summer to earn our library a new marketplace learning center!   Plus, the Kid’s Team Won the Reading Challenge! The marketplace is now available for families to use in our children’s area. It is designed to help our preschool and toddler patrons learn through play and will feature rotating themes of play such as grocery store, tools and repair, and a flower shop. The repair shop is open now, with alphabet locks, gears, and a pint-sized tool box. Stop by and check it out! To wrap up the program: At the close of our six week Tails and Tales Summer Reading Challenge, the kid’s team won the Summer Reading Crown for the second summer in a row! Congrats to everyone on the kid’s team who each earned an extra raffle ticket for our big prize raffle and bragging rights as the reading champions!

Emergency Board Meeting

On Monday July 19th at 6:30 PM, the library annex will be the site of an emergency board meeting. The library’s board of trustees will meet to discuss funding for the proposed building expansion.

We’re hiring

The Pawling Library is looking to hire a part-time Library Clerk to work the circulation desk on Tuesdays and Sundays. Safety Update

Starting Wednesday June 23rd, the Pawling Library will be relaxing its safety restrictions. Fully vaccinated individuals may use their best judgment about whether to wear a mask. All public computers will be available for use, and we will resume our normal hours of operation. This means that the library will be open Monday June 28th. (We will, as in years past, be closed on Sundays in July and August.) Altered Art: Images of Pawling

Welcome to Lonna Kelly’s Postcard Mail Art Project wherein participants creatively alter postcards to their liking, which they then mail back to  our library.  Let your imagination run wild. Use whatever medium you prefer to create an original work of art. Stop by our library’s circulation desk for a postcard. A different  postcard (see below) will be available at our library during each season.    Photographer and Mail Art fan Lonna Kelly has selected and photographed four Pawling scenes reproduced on postcards.  Artwork will be scanned and posted on the websites for the Pawling Library & lonnakellystudio.com. Altered Art: Images of Pawling is part of a year of celebrations to honor our library’s one-hundredth anniversary.  Please join us, and celebrate our library and our community! Stories about the Animals at a Farm Sanctuary / Online Program

The sanctuary currently has 110 animals, including goats, sheep, pigs, chickens, turkeys, donkeys, and horses. The farm’s cofounders, Ellen and Bill Crain, will tell the stories of some of the animals. The program will be of interest to children as well as adults. About our presenters: Ellen Crain is a retired pediatrician. She is a professor emerita at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Bill Crain is a professor of psychology at The City College of New York. He is the author of The Emotional Lives of Animals and Children: Insights from a Farm Sanctuary. COME TOGETHER PAWLING: Viewing of TED TALK video on How we can protect truth in the age of misinformation and discussion / Online Program

Our wellness as individuals and as a community depends on continued sharing, support and conversation in times of celebration as well as in times of conflict. About our presenter: Marian Grudko is the author of Lucinda Snowdrop and co-author of Claudine: A Fairy Tale for Exceptional Grownups, with T.A. Young. She is also a composer and storyteller, and her work can be seen on her new and evolving YouTube channel.

These behaviors are a form of communication, and are essential to understanding the needs of the person with dementia. This program will help attendees identify common triggers for behaviors associated with dementia and learn strategies for addressing common dementia-related behaviors.
