This summer, you can track your reading with the Pawling Library’s Summer Reading Program! To get started, come into the library and pick up a Summer Reading Program Booklet. Our booklets track reading week by week, giving you the freedom to set unique reading goals for your family. If you are away this summer, do not worry! You can track your reading using the Reader Zone app for your Android, Apple, or Kindle device. You can also use Reader Zone on your desktop. Create an account and use the access code pawling-free. Throughout the summer when you participate in our Summer Reading Program, you can receive weekly prizes including forever books, science and craft kits, and more. Summer is here, and there’s tons of exciting programs happening for children in the library! From Lydia Adams Davis’ family concert to our Core Literacy Camps, summer programs abound! Registration forms are available now! You can find them here. You can also stop by and pick up a form from the circulation desk or register online through our online portal. A general guide to our programs can be found here. Registration for our summer session programs runs from Wednesday, June 13th to Monday, July 2nd. Registration is required for all events. The registration will operate using a lottery system, as in previous years. Come drop off your form at any point during the library’s regular hours at the library’s circulation desk, pick a lottery number, and get ready for summer learning. If you register online, the computer will assign your number for you. Please plan to fill out one form per family. Placement status will be announced by preferred method of contact by July 7th. Calling all teens 11-18 years old! Searching for volunteer opportunities for the summer and/or interested in working with children? We need you! You are invited to apply to our summer internship program. Interns help out during the summer to make sure that all children who participate in our summer literacy programs have a wonderful and learning-filled experience. To qualify, interns must submit a volunteer application and attend a program orientation in the end of June. Registration for Spring 2018 Children’s Programs has begun! Children from birth to grade four and their families are welcome to join Ms. Neena and Ms. Kate to learn, play, and grow together. Programs are free for all families. Program registration is by lottery from March 26-April 2. If you miss this window, don’t worry! You can still sign up for programs as space is available. Saturday, 3/10 5:30-6:30 pm – Ms. Neena, Main Library Caregivers and children ages 4-8 are invited to participate in a series of challenges together, all of which aim to boost their reading skills. Have fun together completing tasks and competing, either against each other or together to reach the highest score! Whether just learning letters or reading whole books, this evening will provide families with fun, easy to reproduce tools that they can use at home to keep reading skills sharp! Holmes resident and local author Jennifer Lohrfink Morfea and illustrator Erik Draw stop by the library to read their book, The Little Hyena. The event includes a Q&A, and Erik will demonstrate his illustration techniques live. Attendees will have the chance to win signed copies of their books and participate in a fun animal art project, led by the author. Children K-4 and their families are welcome to attend. Now that the school year is in full swing and the leaves have begun to change, we’re starting back up with the Fall season of Children’s Programs. We have entered the final week of summer children’s programs. To celebrate the end of a fantastic summer, we will be holding not one but TWO celebrations! Join Ms. Neena and Ms. Martina for the last two events of the summer–The End of Summer Carnival and The Solar Eclipse Picnic. End of Summer Carnival: (Sunday, August 20th, 1-3 pm): All summer, the teens and families of Pawling have been working hard with Kate and Martina to create a family friendly carnival. Come celebrate the end of the summer with a celebration the whole library is in on! We will also have tons of prizes and snacks for all to enjoy. Solar Eclipse Picnic: (Monday, August 21st, 1-4 pm): The Great American Solar Eclipse is August 21st. Join us for our viewing event and some fun suitable for all ages. While we observe the phases of the eclipse, we’ll make our own Solar Eclipse book to take home. On Thursday June 15th the Pawling Library will host a popsicle party for the families of Pawling. This will be an opportunity for you to meet our new children’s program team, Neena McBaer and Martina Marchese. Feel free to drop by any time between 4 and 5 PM in order to meet Neena and Martina and to have a popsicle. We will also have crayons and Legos out for the children (and adults!) to use. If you are able to RSVP in advance (by emailing children@pawlinglibrary.org), it would help us figure out how many popsicles to buy. If you are not able to RSVP, please come anyway!
