Pawling Library Continues to Work Hard for the Community

With the Pawling Library closed due to the state-wide government response to Covid-19, Brian Avery, Library Director, has his team working behind the scenes in many ways and on many projects. “Since the time when we closed, the staff and I have been primarily focused on becoming a better library when we re-open. The part-time staff has been doing professional development courses via Universal Class (free to all library card holders) and the full-time staff has been doing a combination of professional development, projects that they had been wanting to tackle but never had the time to do, and planning programs,” Avery said. hoopla is here

Your Pawling Library card now offers you free access to streaming content through hoopla. While the focus of hoopla (like Kanopy) is movies, hoopla does also offer TV shows, comics, music, eBooks, and audiobooks. Unlike Overdrive, there is never any wait time for eBooks and audiobooks on hoopla. Stream videos using Kanopy

The Pawling Library now offers streaming videos through Kanopy. Any Pawling resident with a library card can watch up to four movies a month by visiting http://pawling.kanopy.com Films can be streamed from any computer, television, mobile device or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast or Roku. Kanopy showcases more than 30,000 of the world’s best films, including award-winning documentaries, rare and hard-to-find titles,film festival favorites, indie and classic films, and world cinema with collections from Kino Lorber, MusicBox Films, Samuel Goldwyn,The Orchard, The Great Courses, PBS and thousands of independent filmmakers. This service is completely free for patrons, and is supported in part by a grant from the Pawling Community Foundation.

Access Universal Class with Your Library Card

Universal Class offers lifelong learning courses in over 30 subject areas, many of which offer continuing education units (CEUs). More than 500 courses are available, and all are designed and led by professional instructors to build deeper understanding and mastery of subject matter. Universal Class includes videos, assignments, quizzes, tests, and options for social media interaction with other learners. You may take multiple classes and learn at your own pace.

National Voter Registration Day

Tuesday September 25th is National Voter Registration Day. Volunteers will be on hand at the library all day to assist anyone who would like to register to vote or would like to update their voter registration. Laptop Available for Checkout

The Pawling Library now offers one laptop available for checkout within the library. This laptop can be used anywhere within the building for up to four hours. This is a great option for someone who wants to do some uninterrupted work a little farther away from the hustle and bustle of the circulation desk and public desktop computers. The laptop runs Windows 10 and is equipped with with Microsoft Office 2013, Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Adobe Acrobat. It also uses the same software as the desktop computers to wipe out any information added or changed, as long as you restart the computer at the end of your session. Ebooks Just Got Easier

The Pawling Library has recently upgraded its account with Overdrive, our supplier of eBooks and downloadable audiobooks. If you haven’t used Overdrive before, there’s never been a better time to start. You can access our collection by visiting the Mid Hudson Overdrive website or by downloading the Overdrive app (available for Android, Apple, and Kindle devices). If you are already an Overdrive user, there are three changes you may have noticed to the way Overdrive works at the Pawling Library. Recommend If you have searched Overdrive recently, you may have already noticed that there is now a “Recommend to Library” feature”. For titles that are not currently part of our Overdrive collection, patrons now have the option of letting us know that they would be interested in us purchasing these titles. (Please note that eBooks generally cost the library at least three times as much as print books, so we are unable to purchase all titles recommended to us. Still, we would love to know what you are interested in, and do investigate every purchase...
