This summer, a group of children ages 4-12 worked hard with a team of volunteers, their parents and caregivers, and our staff to write and illustrate their own books! Over 9 weeks, the youth worked on rough drafts, edited, and finalized their projects. They learned about character development and perspective taking, adding in details about how characters feel into their plots. Our team couldn’t be more impressed by their final products and perseverance! Thanks to sponsorship by Dutchess County and the NYS Office of Child and Family Services, each child will receive a free published copy of their book to keep. Take a look at the drafts and covers of some of our participants’ soon-to-be released books!
The Pawling Library is holding its annual book sale May 7/8 and 14/15 and we need volunteers to help with set up and break down. This is a great opportunity for teens to earn community service hours! The sale will take place in the Lathrop Building at Lakeside Park. Set up is Thursday, May 5th (11:00 – 5:00, 7:00-9:00 PM) and Friday, May 6th (9:00 – 4:00). Breakdown is Sunday, May 15th, starting at 3:00 PM. Volunteers can come at any time during these hours. It would be helpful if we know ahead of time how many people we might expect but it’s ok if volunteers stop by when they find time. Please call the library, 855-3444, for more information or to sign up to volunteer.

Volunteer Opportunities for Teens/Tweens There are currently two types of volunteer positions open for ages 11-18–book buddies and garden volunteers. Book Buddies, or our Teen Buddy Book Club, is a program that pairs kids one-on-one with a teen role model. These volunteers spend time virtually helping their buddy gain confidence reading, while they practice their literacy skills and get to know them. For more information, visit https://www.pawlingfreelibrary.org/community-service/ Garden Volunteers tend to the teen garden at the library, but do so on their own schedule, without others around. Possible responsibilities include watering, checking nitrogen levels, and weeding. All volunteers will be able to take vegetables home! Find out more at https://www.pawlingfreelibrary.org/teenprograms/ As we continue our reopening process, additional volunteering opportunities will be considered. We hope to have volunteers helping in additional children’s programs regularly as soon as it is safe and we are allowed. Leadership Interns: Because we are hosting summer programming virtually and have to limit the number of people in our building, the library is not able to hire Leadership Interns this summer. Leadership interns will return...
